ASTON Villa goalkeeper Peter Enckelman winged his way into Brockhall today to join Blackburn Rovers' Premiership fight.

The player will go straight into the squad for Monday's game against Everton at Ewood Park.

But midfielder Tugay will miss the crucial Premiership clash after being called up by Turkey for their Euro 2004 qualifier in Latvia next Saturday.

Rovers were given a special dispensation by the Premier League to sign a new keeper on loan yesterday after David Yelldell became the latest victim of the Ewood injury curse.

And manager Graeme Souness wasted no time in drafting in extra cover by making a swoop for Villa's flying Finn in time for him to be eligible for Monday night's crunch clash with Everton.

"We got special permission from the Premier League yesterday to bring someone in and we've managed to do a deal for Enckelman," said chief executive John Williams this morning.

"We spoke to Villa, Peter was happy to come here, he travelled up yesterday afternoon and signed the papers last night.

"The plan is for him to train today with a view to being included in the squad for Monday night.

"It's a relief to get it done because we could do without any further distractions at the moment."

Rovers had tried to sign Enckelman earlier in the week as cover for Brad Friedel after learning that Alan Kelly would be missing for a further three weeks but their initial request was knocked back by the Premier League.

However, when Yelldell then joined Kelly on the sidelines after a shoulder injury flared up ahead of Wednesday night's reserve game against Bolton, the club had no choice but to make a second request for a dispensation which was granted yesterday afternoon.

That allowed Enckelman to hook up with his new team-mates this morning and the 26-year-old Finn will spend the next 28 days at Ewood as number two to Friedel, which gives Souness vital goalkeeping cover for the games against Everton, Manchester United and Birmingham City.

If after that, Kelly and Yelldell are still not fit to return then Rovers could seek an extension subject to Villa's approval.

"He's here initially for four weeks and we'll have a good look at him in that time," said Souness.

"There is a potential goalkeeper's slot up for grabs. Alan Kelly is in his 30s now, and David Yelldell is only just starting out in the game."

While Enckelman's arrival is a bonus for Souness, the loss of Tugay is a blow as Rovers prepare for one of the biggest games of the season so far.

Souness had hoped the Turkish FA would allow the midfielder to report after Monday's game, but the former Galatasaray star was ordered to return home this weekend.

However, Scotland international Barry Ferguson has been cleared to play.
