WORKERS ended their careers and production at their factory with a goodbye party...for charity.

One hundred and sixty employees at Electrium (formerly Volex), Hindley Green, swept aside the heartbreak of being made redundant to think of others worse off than themselves.

The last assembly workers got together to organise a fancy dress day on the theme of schooldays and organised fines for pupils not in uniform, a raffle, lucky dip and cake and lolly sales to raise £306.05 for Breast Cancer Care.

A buffet was arranged by Ellen Neary who has spent 31 years with the company and Lynn Rowley who has been employed for 16 years.

The Leigh Road site, which has seen production and staff gradually reduced over the past two years, has now become a distribution warehouse.

The party was organised by end of the line inspectors Mandy Kelly and Gwen Mountford who said: "We arranged the party for Thursday because we knew we would all be heartbroken on Friday, and we want to thank everyone for joining in, giving generously and really making it a day to remember. Good luck to everyone in finding new jobs."
