THE Police Complaints Authority is investigating a crash involving a police van which left five people injured in Leyland.

The three car pile-up in Schleswig Way, at its junction with Slater Lane, happened at about 1.30pm, on Monday.

An officer was responding to an emergency when his van hit a Vauxhall Vectra, driven by a man with two male passengers, all from Leyland, which then smashed into a Skoda Felicia driven by a woman.

One person from the Vauxhall suffered serious injuries and is critical in intensive care.

The police officer suffered neck injuries and two people were cut from the Vauxhall before being taken to the Royal Preston Hospital.

A third person from the Vauxhall was slightly injured, along with the Skoda driver from County Durham.

The road was closed for accident investigation and police want the driver of a white builder's van, seen in the area before the crash, to come forward as a possible witness.
