VICTORIA Grabowski is just two weeks away from learning if she is to be named as Greater Manchester's top teenager.

The 17-year-old, of Parkhills Road, Bury, is one of 11 youngsters aged between 10 and 18 who are in contention for Greater Manchester Police's title of Young Citizen of the Year.

The competition recognises the dedication and commitment of caring youngsters who give up their own time to help others. The finalists, one selected from each of Greater Manchester's 11 divisions, will attend a prestigious presentation evening on Friday, November 21.

Victoria is a volunteer at the Re:d Centre working on social interaction skills with 5-10 year olds with learning difficulties, as well as with Whizz Kids, an organisation which helps children in wheelchairs to familiarise themselves with their equipment.

She regularly visits local nursing homes, forming close companionships with the elderly residents.

Victoria also chairs the charities' committee at Bury Grammar School and is the team co-ordinator for the school Buddies scheme, an organisation that helps pupils to deal with problems.

This year's overall winner will receive a prize of £1,000 to be donated to a charity or community initiative of the winner's choice, a holiday to the value of £1,500, a personal cheque for £1,000 and a VIP day out at Manchester United Football Club. All 11 finalists receive a cheque for £100 from Barclays to donate to a charity or community initiative of their choice as well as a voucher for a meal for two at the Thistle Hotel in Manchester.
