FORMER Accrington Stanley star Brett Ormerod today backed his old club to pull off a famous giant-killing when they meet Huddersfield Town in the FA Cup tomorrow.

Ormerod, who now plies his trade in the Premiership with Southampton, knows all about the magic of the Cup after he helped guide the Saints to the final last season.

Sadly, the 27-year-old was ultimately denied a winners' medal on the day as Arsenal triumphed 1-0 in the magnificent surroundings of Cardiff's Millennium Stadium.

But the whole experience was still a magical one and now Ormerod believes the club who helped to launch him on the road to fame and fortune are ready to create some Cup fever of their own against the ailing Terriers.

"It's great to see Accrington Stanley back in the big time again and I don't see why they can't win tomorrow," said Ormerod, who spent a season at Stanley in the 1990s following his release by Blackburn Rovers.

"Every year you always get a Non-league side who goes on to beat a few league clubs and let's hope it's Stanley this time.

"Huddersfield are a big club with some good players but anything can happen on the day and the Stanley lads will certainly be up for it."

Although Huddersfield will start the match as the favourites to book a lucrative place in the second round, Ormerod believes Peter Jackson's Third Division strugglers will travel to the Interlink Stadium with an air of trepidation as they look to avoid a potentially embarrassing exit in the full glare of the BBC's TV cameras.

"Huddersfield won't be relishing this game one bit," said Ormerod, who scored his first ever Stanley goal in an FA Cup tie against Ossett.

"I played for Blackpool against Yeovil a few years ago and they beat us 1-0 on our own ground.

"It was one of those games where we battered them for 90 minutes but they then broke away and scored and it's not a nice feeling to be dumped out by a Non-League side.

"So Huddersfield have everything to lose and nothing to gain.

"Your fans expect you to win and no-one expects you to lose so the pressure is all on them."

Although Stanley start the first round tie as slight underdogs, they are the team in form having made a storming start to their first season in the Nationwide Conference.

John Coleman's side are currently seventh in the table after an impressive run of just one defeat in their last 13 games whereas Huddersfield have lost each of their last five away games in contrast.

"It's always a big step up when you enter a new league and that first season can make you or break you," said Ormerod.

"But Stanley seem to have adapted well to the Conference so far.

"I haven't had chance to see them myself yet this season but some of my mates have told me they've been playing well."

Whatever the outcome of tomorrow's game, it's still likely to be the second biggest pay-day in the club's history after the £250,000 they netted when Ormerod left Blackpool for Southampton two years ago.

The gate-receipts, TV money and merchandise sales generated by the tie could end up earning the club in excess of £100,000.
