AFTER witnessing the sad dismantling of Bury General Hospital over the past few months, might I suggest that some thought now be given to the names of the avenues, drives and streets which will replace it when the site is developed for housing.
Names of benefactors and local dignitaries such as Barlow, Foulds, Street, Wrigley and others were long acknowledged through the names of wards at the hospital and could again be perpetuated when homes replace what was a significant part of the town's history. It would be a shame not to.
We could add to the names mentioned those of other more contemporary staff, doctors, surgeons etc who left their mark on Bury General Hospital over the years. I am sure that the thousands of people who have memories of the hospital would be able to come up with some suggestions. Perhaps the powers-that-be, who decide on new street names, might take notice.
