PARKS in Burnley and Padiham have left others green with envy after picking up a prestigious Green Flag Award.

Thompson Park has achieved the honour for the past five years alongside Memorial Park, Padiham, who have gained the prestigious title in a fourth successive year.

Green Flag judges visited the parks and assessed them on eight criteria - a welcoming place; healthy; safety and security; maintenance and cleanliness; susceptibility; conservation and heritage; community involvement; marketing; and management.

The winners of the national standard for parks and green spaces were announced at a ceremony in Stratford-upon-Avon.

Councillor Barry Guttridge, Burnley Council's executive member for leisure, said: "It's wonderful that Thompson Park and Memorial Park have won the Green Flag award yet again. The awards recognise the hard work and effort that parks service staff and the Friends of the Parks groups have put into these parks to make sure they are welcoming, clean safe and well managed."

Thompson and Memorial were among 58 parks in the North West to achieve the standard.
