COLNE coasted through to the third round of the Division Two Trophy with a 2-0 win over Blackpool Mechanics in a game they dominated from the first whistle.

Captain Gary Rishton returned from injury and James Webster reverted to his midfield role as the Reds made a good start.

Scott Gizon missed a great chance to open the scoring after five minutes when he shot wide with only the keeper to beat.

The home side were under intense pressure as first Paul Walker fired just over and then Bernard Morley dragged his shot wide from a Simpson pass.

Colne had the ball in the net on 34 minutes when the Blackpool keeper parried a free kick and Simpson was on hand to blast home only to be given offside.

More chances went begging and the Reds were incensed when Sam Hayes was hacked down in the box only for the referee to turn down their appeals.

The breakthrough came right on half time when a free kick on the edge of the home box was handled and Carl Haworth drove the penalty home to give Colne the lead.

The second half continued with the Reds in control with first Simpson and then Walker going close. With 59 minutes gone Gizon broke down the left and his low cross found Haworth, who turned inside the box and drove the ball in to put Colne two up.

Rather than sitting back the Reds continued to make chances and Gizon was just wide with a header from a Webster cross. Simpson then set up Webster, whose fierce drive was just wide with the keeper beaten.

The next stop on Colne's November road shows is Southport tomorrow night when they are in Lancashire FA Marsden Cup action, before returning to league duty at Castleton Gabriels on Saturday with a 2pm kick-off.
