A football club set up to tackle juvenile nuisance has been officially named the town's BBC Community Club of the Year.

The Revidge Community Association Saints in Blackburn was created a few years ago in a bid to keep youngsters off the street.

It now has a boys' team of around 25 seven to 11-year-olds and a girls team of ten seven to 12-year-olds.

It was selected as the winner of the Blackburn community club section of the county wide competition.

Co-founder Trish Ferrarin, a coach and chairwoman of the community association, said, "Our secretary Judy Smith has been trying to get funding for pitches for about three years and now that we have been acknowledged by Sport England, which runs this competition, we feel we now have more clout to go back to people to say we are doing something positive in the community.

"We play outside in all weather and the pitches we use, opposite QEGS, are not grassed or flat.

"It all started a few years ago when we called an open meeting because of the hassle from youngsters in New Bank Road and playing in St Silas' school yard. We started the community association at the same time we decided to do something for the youngsters."

The club meets every Saturday and during the school holidays.
