The Kick Racism out of football campaign rolled into towns across the North West this month.

With a series of high profile getures from all the football clubs it was the smaller tournaments at grassroots level which really got the ball rolling.

A football tournament attracted over 250 youngsters to Burnley as part of a campaign to kick racism out of sport.

Bushra Yaqoob, Project Development Worker for the Daneshouse CED Trust Ltd said, "The tournament was a great success with over 30 teams participating from across Burnley. The atmosphere was dynamic with a good level of support from spectators. It was a great opportunity to promote racial equality and at the same time celebrate diversity within Burnley"

The day organised by Burnley Council's sports development unit, in conjunction with Daneshouse Football Club, was held at Towneley High School, Burnley.

Winners and runners-up were: (U10s) Wellfield Church School and Daneshouse FC, (U12s - Boys) Briercliffe Rovers FC and Bengal Star Juniors FC, (U14s - Boys) Jinnah FC and GRJ'A', (U14s - Girls) Readstone Utd 'A' and Barnoldswick Barons

Awards were presented to the winners by the Mayor of Burnley, Councillor Lilian Clark.

Players and spectators at the football competition were also able to see interactive exhibitions on the "History of Black Footballers". A video containing footage of famous footballers talking about their experiences of racism in the game played throughout the day.

The "Kick it Out" initiative is football's anti-racism campaign and is backed by all the game's governing bodies, supporters' organisations and local authorities.
