A FORMER Lancashire Woman of the Year whose life story has been published presented a cheque to charity from a hospital bed.
Winifred Cowell, 90, of Moorland Road, has spent the 38 years since her daughter left home raising money for charity.
Her most recent donation, to the Burnley mayoral charities, was made from a hospital bed after she became unwell.
Winifred's son John chronicled her humble upbringing in his book The Broken Biscuit four years years ago, which was a runaway success in Lancashire.
The book was named after a remark by a family friend that a broken biscuit was all Winifred could afford as a treat for her children. It detailed her experiences of bringing up children with very little money during World War Two, which is what Winifred believes drives her to fundraise for others.
She was named Lancashire Woman of the Year in 2000 for her work for various charities.
Winifred, now a great-great-grandmother, organises sales and other charity events from her home and gives £50 each to a variety of charities, aiming to donate £200 a month.
