A ONE-TIME petty criminal who flouted a court order was given a chance by magistrates to prove he can stay on the straight and narrow.

The Burnley bench heard how Darren Thomas Storey, 33, was now living a normal life rather than one involving drugs and crime.

He had invited local police, who knew him well, round to his home to show them he was a changed man, the court was told.

The defendant, of Walton Street, Colne, admitted failing to comply with a drug treatment and testing order.

The court revoked the order and made a six months community rehabilitation order, with a six months curfew between the hours of 7pm and 6am, six days a week.

Mercedah Jabbari, prosecuting, told the court the order was made after the defendant broke into a sandwich shop. Seven packs of bacon, five cans of tuna and £25 cash were stolen.

Glen Smith, defending, said Storey had lost contact with his DTTO supervisor because at the time he could not function properly. He was now drug free, had not committed any offences and was functioning routinely rather than living a chaotic lifestyle.

Mr Smith added police would speak to the defendant regularly in the street. Storey had asked them round to have a look at his home to show them the conditions he was now living in.

The officers knew the defendant was not committing crime.
