I AM sorry that Steve Metcalfe finds enforcement action targeted at people who fly tip unacceptable (Letters, October 30).
He is wide of the mark in assuming that measures being introduced by the Government to address anti-social behaviour are aimed at the poorest within society.
As a matter of fact, it is the poorest who are most likely to suffer from the impact of anti-social behaviour and the measures will combat the problems in deprived areas.
Fly tipping is a constant problem and I have to inform Steve that the culprits are not poor or deprived but a fragment of society who are simply unwilling to abide by the law. A pro-active approach is required to counter the problem and the actions being taken by the council will certainly help.
Steve's letter also makes bizarre statements in relation to fundamental issues like stop and search powers. Stop and search assists police to catch criminals such as drug dealers and will ensure a reduction in street robbery and the carrying of weapons.
Once again it is the vulnerable who are the victims of crime while far too often the perpetrators escape justice. And sadly, once again it is down to a fragment of society who perceive themselves as above the law and have no respect for their community.
Steve's four bullet points in relation to low pay and health and safety issues are fundamental concerns being addressed by the Government in partnership with the unions. Workers are gaining more rights in relation to workplace procedures.
Steve raises wild concerns about racism caused by Government policies. The Government is to put in place a Commission for Equality and Human Rights that will address the concerns raised. I would advise Steve to keep up to date with what is going on and step into the real world.
Cllr David Whittaker, Labour group, Lancaster City Council.
