PARENTS in East Lancashire are being urged not to risk their child's safety when buying bikes as Christmas presents this year.
Lancashire County Council's road safety group is reminding parents to be aware of cycle safety over the festive period - after figures revealed one in four parents who have bought their child a bike as a Christmas present has never bought them a cycle helmet.
The Government's THINK! Campaign works all year round to encourage a safer environment for Lancashire's road users.
Research into parent's purchases of cycle safety equipment revealed over half have never purchased lights - a legal requirement for riding in the dark - and as many as 85 per cent neglected to buy them fluorescent or reflective clothing, which is essential to be seen clearly in the dark winter months.
County councillor, Jean Yates, who is responsible for Highways and Transportation, said: "With almost 5,000 child cyclists killed or injured on UK roads in 2002, cycle safety equipment is vital to protect your child when they are out and about.
"Helmets should be worn properly to provide sufficient protection against head injury."
