A BURY Council boss has died in a swimming accident in the Caribbean.
Mr John Ball, who was a procurement manager in the environment and development services department, was on holiday in Cuba when he got into difficulties while swimming in the sea during a boat trip.
Despite efforts to resuscitate him, Mr Ball of Broadbent Drive, Birtle, was pronounced dead by waiting paramedics when the catamaran reached the shore.
Cuban authorities said his death was from asphyxia as a result of drowning.
Mr Ball (47) was a keen traveller and a popular member of staff at the town hall where he had worked since 1975. Colleagues are said to be shocked by the news.
Philip Allen, director of environment and development services, paid tribute to Mr Ball.
"John was a very hard working, conscientious gentleman who gave 120 per cent to Bury Council," he said. "He supported charity events such as Children in Need and only a week before his death he took part by having his chest waxed by one of the girls in the department and, together with a colleague, Terry Holland, raised more than £500.
"This followed the year when he had his head, beard and moustache shaved, again raising hundreds of pounds for Children in Need. He will be very sadly missed."
Mr Ball's body was flown home at the weekend. An inquest is expected to open later this week.
