SAFETY checks are being carried out at 120 flats in Rossendale after workmen discovered asbestos while servicing boilers.
Rossendale Council has now set up an emergency helpline for worried residents.
Tenants of the Central Square flats, Bury Road, Haslingden, were told by letter on Monday that inspections would be needed after two types of asbestos were discovered.
Housing chiefs stress that the chrysotile and amosite asbestos found in the flats is low risk even if it has been damaged.
Asbestos was found on boxing to bathroom soilpipes, in hallway cupboards and on the backs of living room doors.
An action plan will be dependent on the inspection results. Workmen will seal fibres with paint or varnish to ensure fibres are not released into the air.
Coun Marilyn Procter, housing committee chairman, said: "A helpline has been set up for tenants as we know people fear the word 'asbestos'.
"The types of asbestos found in Haslingden are unlikely to need removal but we have to put safety first by checking it is in a safe condition.
"We have only actually found asbestos in three properties. The surveys will reveal the extent and state of the asbestos and we will need to see results before we can finalise an action plan."
The letter also contains a question and answer section advising tenants flats, built in the late 1960s, on how to avoid damaging the material.
Tenants are being told not to use powertools on affected surfaces.
Coun Procter added: "People should know that the risk is very low, provided that the surfaces are not damaged. It is almost certain that most asbestos can be treated in situ, although some will be removed where that appears to be the safer option.
"We will have a clearer picture by the end of January when the inspections are completed."
The helpline number is 01706 831628 and will be open from 2-4pm today and tomorrow..
