A LEIGH head teacher summed up 2003 with the words "Wow, what a year".
Now John Pout, his staff and pupils at Westleigh High School are looking forward to a better 2004 with a new all-weather floodlit pitch.
The highly successful academic year was sadly blighted by tragedy when two pupils, brothers Stephen and Michael Ridley and their father, Shaun, lost their lives in a summer boating accident.
The year started with preparations for the Ofsted inspection in March which brought an excellent report.
In May the school retained its Investors in People status and submitted for the Healthy School Standard. Technology College status was also extended until 2007.
June brought record year nine SATS results for maths and English and August was also a proud month when the Year 11s gained the best ever GCSE results.
In October teacher Julie Levy, who is now studying for a Masters Degree in special needs, won the National Teacher of the Year Award for excellence in special needs.
The title brought a £25,000 prize pot for the school which will spend £15,000 of the money on ITC equipment.
Mr Pout said: "The occasion at the London Palladium and the video clip of the school made for a very emotional occasion.
"With the new pitch and lots of talented new pupils in the school I am sure next year will be at least as good as this."
The latest edition of the school newsletter "Aiming High" reveals stories of talented pupils and staff.
On January 20, 21 and 22 pupils will present a music, drama and dance extravaganza highlighting famous shows.
