for Legion
THE Leigh branch of the Royal British Legion is preparing to celebrate a number of monumental anniversaries next year.
President Jan Thomas says 2004 will be the last occasion on which the Normandy Landings are marked on a massive scale and is appealing to war heroes to book now if they want to join a pilgrimage to commemorate D-Day 60 years on.
He said: "With each successive year there seems to be less and less interest in remembering those who gave their lives for the freedom of others."
Event
The RBL has organised pilgrimages to commemorate the event from June 4-8 and again from August 3-6.
For information on this trip and tours to war cemeteries, war memorials and battlefields contact Jan on the first Tuesday of each month at Leigh Conservative Club, Railway Road (from 7.30pm).
He can also help those wishing to replacie or obtain awards including the National Servicel, the Merchant Naval Service, the Normandy Campaign and the Arctic Zone Campaign medals.
