STAN Ternent roared his defiance following rumours he had quit in the wake of Burnley's derby day defeat at Preston.

The Clarets chief chatted with chairman Barry Kilby within minutes of an astonishing game at Deepdale, which Burnley lost 5-3 despite three times coming from behind.

That alone prompted premature television reports of Ternent's demise live to the nation.

But a visibly disappointed Ternent emerged from the dressing room to slam talk of him leaving the Turf Moor hot-seat of his own accord.

Ternent said: "Under no circumstances would I resign from Burnley Football Club. I never even asked the chairman to come across to the dressing room and he probably came across because he was as naffed off as I am and to commiserate with the players.

"I wouldn't let the chairman, the board of directors or anybody else down, although if they want me to leave that's a different ball game.

"But as far as resigning or turning anything in, I've never done it in my life and I don't intend to start now, so I'd like to make that perfectly, crystal clear.

"In a nutshell - b******!"

Asked if he was disappointed at the Deepdale defeat, Ternent added: "Disappointed? Suicidal is more like it!

"We created 20 chances, we've scored three, and should have scored 10, so we were entertaining for the neutral! That's how good we have been today.

"It's frustrating, We have scored 36 goals, but conceded over 40 and we can't go on conceding goals at the rate we are going. It ain't right."
