COLNE started the Christmas programme off with a hard-fought win against Ashton Town in the first league game at Holt House since October 22.

The visitors had the better of the early exchanges and had three corners in quick succession which came to nothing. On 10 minutes the Reds' first real threat was rewarded with a goal when a Gavin Cooper free kick was met by Sam Hayes whose stooping header found the corner of the net.

Colne then took took control and Scott Gizon was only just over with a drive on 14 minutes and a shot from Jason Heffernan rebounded off the visitors keeper to Carl Haworth who nearly opened his account for the afternoon.

A long ball from midfielder James Webster found Ian Simpson free in the box but his cross shot was blocked. On 35 minutes Colne increased their lead when after a scramble in the area Haworth was the quickest to react and forced the ball home from close range.

The second half conditions deteriorated and against rain and a strong wind the Reds fought hard to make progress, but a set piece on 66 minutes resulted in Gary Rishton scoring from close range to make the points safe.

Colne used all three substitutes in the last half hour and saw the game out without difficulty.

The festive programme continues with a Christmas cracker at Nelson on Boxing Day before opening the New Year fixtures by entertaining Padiham at Holt House on January 3, kick off 3pm.

The Reds must wait another week to establish their opponents in the last 32 of the FA Vase as last Saturday's match between BAT Sports and AFC Wimbledon was again postponed.
