DALE went out of their second cup tournament in five days as high-flying Bridlington produced a superb second half performance to progress to the next round of the President's Cup.

Up until the interval, Dale had more than matched their opponents, but a lucky break on half-time saw the Yorkshire side equalise and they never looked back from then on.

Dale were once again lacking in numbers up front, with Simon Burton reduced to a sub's role due to illness, so a makeshift strike force of Steve Cunningham and Doni Clarke was employed to fill the gaps left by Brian Welch and Burton.

The home side made all the early running and Phil Harrison volleyed a good chance over the bar after seven minutes.

A minute later Martin Thacker wasted a golden opportunity to but Bridlington in the lead. Dale keeper Mark Andrews was adjudged to have brought down Paul Palmer despite minimal contact between the two, but Thacker hammered his penalty well wide of the target.

Andrews then produced a great save to tip David Ingram's header over the bar before Dale took the lead on 35 minutes. A neat move down the right between Lee Duffy, Chris Perkins and Chris Brooks ended with Brooks laying the ball back to Duffy and the midfielder on loan from Rochdale curled the ball into the top corner from 25 yards.

Dale took the game to the home side for the remainder of the half but Bridlington grabbed that lucky leveller on half time. A long free kick was punched clear by Andrews only for the ball to strike a defender before rolling to Steven Heath, who tapped the ball into an empty net.

Spurred on by their equaliser, Bridlington edged in front on 72 minutes. Paul Farley raced onto another big boot from defence and rode his luck as Andrews blocked his initial effort, but the ball bounced back to the striker who had a simple finish.

The game was wrapped up with eight minutes to go. Andrews misjudged another hack clear from the Bridlington defence and Daniel Drayton scored the third.
