A 31-year-old man from Leigh died after he was hit by a car while walking along the Liverpool-bound carriageway of the M62.

Anthony Williamson, of Hooten Lane, collided with a white Nissan Micra near to junction seven at Rainhill, at about 4.40am on Saturday.

He died instantly from his injuries. Mr Williamson was the father of a five-year-old boy and worked as a process operator in Manchester.

Police say they are not sure why he was walking along the westbound carriageway or where he was headed as he was last seen at the Hillcrest Hotel, Cronton, at about

2.30am by a friend.

After the first collision, it appears Mr Williamson was hit by a number of other vehicles.

The M62 was closed for two hours while accident investigators examined the scene.
