Leigh Centurions 40 St Helens 22 by Mike Hulme: TOMMY Martyn's Testimonial game against the club he served for 10 years went off perfectly.

But within minutes of Leigh's 40-22 success over St Helens, assistant coach was looking to the future.

Martyn wasn't in the least critical of Saints boss Ian Millward who sent a youthful side to Hilton Park. "They didn't have to send a side at all - but they did," Martyn said. "I'm grateful to them because it was a great exercise for us with so many new faces in the side.

"But this is only a side event. Our priority is getting to the Grand Final, winning it and putting this club in Super League. I'm sure we've got a great chance."

One of the new recruits, loose-forward Ian Knott, was outstanding and earned praise from Martyn. "Ian's a quality player, a great leader and a good lad. He'll play a big part for us this year."

Leigh used 29 players as head coach Darren Abram cast his eye over the squad.

Leigh's tries came from Chris Percival (2), Dale Cardoza (2), Neil Turley (2), Shane Irabor, Steve Maden, and Andy Isherwood with Percival and Bradbury kicking a goal apiece.
