BURY Diabetes Parents' Support Group is affiliated to Diabetes UK and exists to provide advice to the parents of children with diabetes. In conjunction with consistently excellent support from the paediatric team at Fairfield Hospital, the group is able to reassure parents that this chronic illness can be managed, to enable children to live a near-normal, healthy life.
This support is especially important to the parents of newly-diagnosed children, of whom there are typically up to 10 a year in the Bury area. The availability of such local, easily accessible support is of immense value.
We were concerned then, to hear of discussions which could lead to the transfer of Bury's women and child health services to North Manchester General, under a rationalisation programme.
The closure of these facilities would undermine this support network and, inevitably, worsen the service the children deserve. It would be of great assistance if readers would consider writing to our local MPs, David Chaytor (Bury North) or Ivan Lewis (Bury South) to express their opposition.

Support Group.
