SICK children stuck in hospital for Christmas were given some festive cheer when their footballing heroes dropped in for a visit.

Players from Burnley FC took time out from their festive training schedule to visit youngsters in the Deerplay ward at Burnley General Hospital yesterday.

The stars, including fans' favourite Glen Little and Robbie Blake, joined mascot Bumble Bee in popping in to drop off chocolate selection boxes donated by Tesco's.

Neil Gott, 13, from Nelson, was among those having to endure the festive season in hospital.

He said: "I support Burnley so it was great to see all the players and they really made my Christmas. Glen Little is my favourite."

Glen, who lives in Simonstone with his wife and son Kieron, 3, said: "I know that if I had ever been in hospital over Christmas when I was a child it would have been a big disappointment, so it's important that we come in and do this sort of thing and help cheer the kids up and hopefully make their stay a bit better."

The hospital's play co-ordinator Angela Whitworth said: "It's lovely that the players can take time out to come and see the children and I'm sure it was greatly appreciated."
