A BREWER and a publican have teamed up to spice up pints in Lancaster and give punters a new beer sensation.
George Palmer, of Heysham-based Brysons Brews, and Matt Jackson, owner of the Sun Hotel, Lancaster, have spent the last six months concocting unique flavoured beers.
The ales, which will taste of root ginger, vanilla, oak chip, coriander, cocoa and liquorice, will be on offer at the Sun Hotel, on Church Street, when it opens in January.
"It is the first time that I have done this with beer and I have to say it has been an interesting project," says George, who established Brysons three years ago.
"It was a challenge because Matt knew what sort of flavours he wanted and so for me it was trial and error at times - but I hope I have managed it."
He says he had to adopt a different brewing technique to make the beer - to get the desired flavour the fermentation process had to be slowed down.
But having sampled a few of the tipples, he is confident there will be some winners out of the 15 beers that have been casked.
"The flavour has been put straight into the casks and so the customer should get a different taste experience each time by either flavour or age," he says.
Matt says it is 'pure accident' that the new beers will be ready for release as the new pub prepares to throw open its doors for the first time.
"It is an experiment to see if we can do it because people do not seem to appreciate what a beer is and just order a Budweiser. It will be nice to try to educate people," he says.
He told the Citizen that people have been experimenting with beers for years and many publicans had led by example.
He describes how years ago a publican in Lancaster used to stand liquorice sticks in the beer at the bar, which he says was a brave move at the time.
And as a judge on a panel at a beer festival he remembered trying a coriander beer and thought it was a very unusual but exciting flavour.
But he says: "The way we have put the flavours into these beers is unique, but I wanted to do something different and we have taken the experiment onto another level by seasoning them."
Matt adds that he does not plan to be brewing special beers all year round at the Sun - but as a special occasion once every year.
The beers, which will be released on a weekly basis, will be available in half pints only for £1.50.
