AS COUNTY Cllr Jonathan Sear continues to peddle misleading statements with regard to Park and Ride for Lancaster (Citizen, Decem-ber 11), we feel it is necessary to respond.
To our knowledge there is no plan to sell off car parks in Lancaster. Indeed, the current review of parking provision shows that there is a shortage of car parking spaces in the city.
The Accordis site has recently been bought by a private developer. Perhaps Cllr Sear can persuade the new owner to develop it for park and ride.
Even if this unlikely scenario arises, park and ride would not work unless a dedicated bus lane was provided - this would require the reallocation of pedestrian footways to road use, which directly contradicts Green Party policy. Moreover, the projected cost of around £6 million makes it a non-starter.
Cllr Sear is well aware of this but, due to his lack of influence at County Hall, makes up stories like a lonely child with an imaginary friend.
His focus ought to be on the Morecambe to Lancaster corridor and providing better public transport to alleviate the bottleneck on Morecambe Road.
We hope he will join us in looking for realistic proposals to solve this problem instead of inventing imprac-tical schemes like some latter day Walter Mitty.
Cllrs Janice Hampson and Peter Robinson, Morecambe Town Hall.
