Leigh 1st XV 30, Wigan 0: In wet and windy conditions, the Leigh pack soon established control over the visitors in this local derby sponsored by The Leigh Arms.
Powerful play by Liku set up a good attacking position, allowing the backs to move the ball wide for full-back Wilcock to open the scoring in the corner.
A sweeping back move saw Irwin denied a score for a forward pass but an earlier offside offence allowed Fisher to slot home the penalty for a 8-0 lead. Leigh's pacy backs continued to feed off the forwards possession and Wilcock finished off another planned move to score his second try, which Fisher converted.
With Leigh in complete command, left winger Irwin showed good pace to race over in the corner, and the identical effort was repeated shortly afterwards for him to gain his second touchdown, giving Leigh a comfortable 25-0 half-time lead.
Wigan upped their tempo in the second half but despite ample possession, they were unable to breach the Leigh defence. Leigh went close to scoring on several occasions but over-eagerness spoiled their chances. The stalemate was eventually broken in the dying minute when Anderson made a surging break and substitute Hunte finished strongly to clinch a handsome victory.
Tyldesley 3, Leigh 3rd 55
The Hawks lit up a cold December day with some fine Rugby against a Tyldesley side who had beaten them earlier in the season.
The game opened at a fast pace with the Leigh back three of Magnall, Baines and Edgerton taking full advantage of wayward kicking running the ball strongly out of defence, setting up a good platform for Leigh to attack.
After several good back moves pressure told when standoff R. Houghton sidestepped his way over for a fine individual try which Greenwood converted, and then added a penalty following a high tackle by a Tyldesley player. Further pressure led to another try from Jones, again duly converted by Greenwood. Tyldesley then had their only scoring opportunity of the afternoon when handling errors resulted in a penalty being awarded in front of the sticks. The half ended with a Krause kick, chase and gather to leave the score 22-3 in Leigh's favour.
Changes at half time only heaped misery on the Tyldesley side as the substitutes quickly adapted to the pace of the game, and flowing backs moves resulted in tries for Waterworth 2, and Eccleston.
The forwards suddenly then raised their game and barnstorming runs by Anthony Peters made a try for D Houghton and then himself. The try scoring was completed as Houghton weaved his way over for a fine effort for his second of the half. Second half conversions were added by Greenwood(1), and R Houghton (3) to leave the score 55-3 in Leigh's favour as the whistle went.
