A TOWN centre 'eyesore' is to be bulldozed to make way for new £443,000 depot for council services in Nelson.
The offices and warehouse in Fleet Street, Bradley, will replace temporary buildings that house Pendle Council's operational services department, which includes refuse collection, street cleaning, highway maintenance, winter services and recycling.
Despite being designed to only last a decade, the temporary accommodation has been in use for 29 years.
Concerns about health and safety had jeopardised job security for the 180 workers based on the site, which had an uncertain future.
As well as safeguarding jobs, the new 976 sq metre development will also lead to four posts being created in a new materials recovery facility, sorting and bailing recyclables, with the potential for more expansion.
It will also provide a base close to the heart of Nelson for frontline environmental schemes such as the Neighbourhood Pride officer and town centre wardens.
The development at the site has been funded by Pendle Council with the help of a £90,000 grant from Pendle Partnership.
Partnership chairman Dennis Mendoros met operational services manager Ian McInery this week to discuss how the new facilities could be used.
Mr Mendoros said: "I am very pleased with progress on this project. Jobs will be secured and environmental objectives will be met as a result of this project.
"This will also remove an eyesore from the Bradley area of Nelson, which is affecting its image and potential investment."
Mr McInery said: "We have waited many years for a new depot. Thanks to the grant from Pendle Partnership this is now possible.
"We are all looking forward to moving into the new building in 2004."
