ALMOST 500 North West workers were given a Christmas boost following a crackdown on bosses who fail to pay the minimum wage.

Gerry Sutcliffe, the government's employment relations minister, announced that almost £1.8million in wage arrears was uncovered this year by the Inland Revenue.

Now 483 workers in the region are set to receive a pay boost.

Mr Sutcliffe said: "Most employers in the UK are complying with the minimum wage because they know that decent wages mean a well-motivated workforce, which in turn encourages enhanced business competitiveness and performance, but a small percentage still refuse to comply."

The national minimum wage for adults aged 22 or over is now £4.50 and £3.80 for 18 to 21 year olds.

Anyone who thinks they are not being paid the minimum wage should call the Inland Revenue's helpline on 0845 600 678 or use the website on www.tiger. gov.uk
