METROLINK services face disruption on New Year's Day, with a planned 24-hour strike by drivers.

About half of the company's 160 drivers are expected to take part in the strike. The action involves members of ASLEF which is claiming union recognition from Serco Metrolink.

But bosses say that a single union agreement, which was put in place with the backing of the TUC, means the TGWU currently has exclusive negotiating rights for all Metrolink staff. The company says it does not have the power to change the agreement.

Earlier this month, Metrolink drivers who are members of ASLEF voted for industrial action in a bid to win recognition. It is not known whether further stoppages are planned. Metrolink said disruption could start at 10pm on Wednesday (Dec 31). It will be providing a reduced service on New Year's Day.

A 15-minute service will start at 10.30am from Bury to Manchester. The last service from the city centre to Bury will be at 6pm. For more details call customer services on 205 2000.
