RUNNERS used the perfect opportunity to burn off the extra pounds piled on over Christmas by taking part in an annual Boxing Day fun run.

The 26th annual Whinnbury Naze Dash started off in Rawtenstall with participants running 4.5 miles in the cold and rain to Cowpe Lowe.

They turned up at the starting line donned in fancy dress -- with even a makeshift wedding set taking centre spot.

A variety of runners in fancy dress helped make for an amusing afternoon as they ran through the muddy Rossendale fields..The event, organised by Rossendale Harriers, saw runners taking part from all over the country including Scotland, the Lake District and running clubs throughout the North West.

More than 200 people completed the gruelling run.

Steve Duxbury, Rossendale Harriers organiser, said: "We don't make any money out of the event because any funds raised are ploughed back into paying for the prizes and awards."

The event finished with a presentation at Marl Pits Sports Centre for race winners and fancy dress winners.
