THE YMCA building in Blackburn could be demolished and replaced with new flats under proposals being considered by charity bosses.
Soaring maintenance costs at the Clarence Street building mean the charity is considering leaving the site and getting new or more suitable premises elsewhere in Blackburn or Darwen.
The YMCA has been in Blackburn since 1896 and in its current premises since 1967.
The organisation runs several clubs for young people, including a popular music club and also provides sports facilities for all sections of the community.
But now the YMCA has submitted an application for outline planning permission for the demolition of the existing building and the construction of 42 one and two-bedroomed flats.
Terry Ratcliffe, chairman of Blackburn YMCA, said: "The current premises were purpose-built but certain aspects of its construction have meant that maintenance costs are now unacceptably high and the building does not provide the flexibility needed to meet the associations ambitions.
"Because of the high running and maintenance costs, one option being considered is to dispose of the current building with a view to acquiring new or more suitable premises in Blackburn with Darwen.
"Accordingly, outline planning permission to erect one- and two-bedroom flats on the current site, has been sought.
"Discussions have been held with the local authority over possible new sites and services but it must be stressed that no firm decisions have been taken."
The YMCA is also keen to hear the views of the local community and anyone who currently uses the centre.
Anyone wanting to express a view can contact Ian Sadler, general secretary of Blackburn YMCA, at Edinburgh House, Clarence Street, Blackburn, BB1 8AN, and can also e-mail him on ymcablackburn@yahoo.
