A DAREDEVIL community leader is preparing to face up to his fears and take a giant leap for charity.

Mayor of Pendle Coun Mohammed Iqbal is planning a bungee jump in April to raise funds for the Mayoress' charities -- the Pendle branch of the Multiple Sclerosis Society and the neo-natal unit at Burnley General Hospital.

He decided to take up the challenge after being dared to do the jump by the Mayoress's Committee, which organises fundraising.

The Mayor has issued an appeal for potential sponsors to get in touch and says he will complete the stunt wearing a T-shirt bearing the name of whoever pledges the most cash.

Coun Iqbal said: "I am absolutely terrified of heights, so this will be something of a challenge to say the least. However, I am determined to rise to it. I have suffered from vertigo for as long as I can remember and I have certainly never done anything like this before. I haven't even been on any rides at amusement parks because I can't stand being up too high.

"But I am determined to try and raise some money for these charities as they both do such important work for the people of Pendle.

"The jump itself isn't until April so I've got a while to get prepared. At the moment, I am trying to get my head around what I have agreed to do and prepare myself psychologically.

"And I might have to have a few practice leaps out of the town hall window as well!" To sponsor Coun Iqbal, contact Pat Hudson on 01282 661633.
