AN MBE in the New Year's Honours list went to Walter Read who set-up the British Red Cross centres throughout East Lancashire.
Mr Read created 14 centres in Rossendale, Burnley and Clitheroe.
And a young soldier shot dead by an IRA sniper was from East Lancashire.
Daniel Martin Blinco, 23, whose parents lived in Milton Street, Oswaldtwistle, was hit while patrolling in South Armagh.
