BURNLEY Council has announced plans aimed at keeping old people warm during the winter months.

The Home Energy Efficiency Scheme has been running since 1998. Owner-occupiers and tenants in privately rented homes who are over 60 or claiming benefit can claim up to £500 for home insulation.

Householders can use the cash for a number of measures, including loft insulation, cavity wall insulation, draught proofing and reflective radiator panels.

Councillor Carole Galbraith, executive member for regeneration and housing, said: "Laying a blanket of 10- inch loft insulation can really make a difference to the warmth of houses and even save a life. I am delighted this initiative has improved the homes of so many vulnerable people who may be at risk."
