A DISUSED mill in Padiham has been sealed off after becoming infested with pigeons.
Windows in the building in Wyre Street were smashed by vandals, which allowed the birds to get in and roost.
But Padiham Town Council sprang into action after receiving complaints about the birds from local residents, who were concerned that the mill would also start to attract rats.
The Mayor of Padiham, Coun Bob Clark, made attempts to trace the owner of the building - which was left empty after clothing manufacturer Reeves Brothers Ltd moved out - to ask him to secure the property.
But the owner was abroad and it was proving difficult to contact him about the problems.
However, a keyholder was found, pest control were called in and the building has been temporarily sealed off.
Coun Clark said: "The problem was that the pigeons had got in through the windows, which had been smashed by vandals.
"Certain people were feeding the birds but other residents complained that there were too many birds in the vicinity and brought the problem to the council's attention.
"The owner was abroad but now a key holder has been found and pest control have been brought in there seems to be an improvement in the situation."
The mayor said he would be keeping a close eye on the building to try and ensure the problem did not arise again.
He said: "I am pleased that the building has been sealed off and now we must wait to see what happens in the near future.
"However, in this area most of the buildings that were disused have now been taken up by industry, so I am hopeful for the future of this building too."
