BURY...0

BURY haven't won at Huddersfield for 40 years and Danny Swailes' own goal ensures it will be at least another 12 months before they have another chance to end their jinx.

Certainly, Andy Preece's exit from Gigg Lane hasn't helped the Shakers halt their miserable losing run.

Swailes deflected a Rob Edwards' corner on the half-hour mark past keeper Glyn Garner and the 528-strong Bury supporters knew a seventh straight defeat was on the cards.

But the visitors did have chances to at least rescue a point - the bulk of which fell to out-of-sorts striker Gareth Seddon.

Seddon can't buy a goal at the moment though his team-mates were just as culpable as caretaker boss Graham Barrow's chances of getting the post full-time appear to be disappearing with each defeat.

However, the team couldn't be faulted for effort and spirit and Barrow took plenty of positives from the match.

"I can't complain about the performance, but it's got to turn for us some time!" said Barrow. "We showed great promise at Orient, put in a decent performance against Carlisle and we did well for 90 minutes here and were unlucky.

"As long as we are creating chances then I'm sure we will get some rewards.

"Danny has been a bit unlucky recently. He's not recovered from the goal against Carlisle. It left me sick that we didn't take something from the game, but we are improving. It's results that count though and we need a win to stop the rot.

"Chris Porter had an illness and I don't think the supporters realised that. Some of them were booing me when I took him off but he did well to play for as long as he did because he's not been well.

"David Nugent was good when he came on and at the moment we have got to use all options that are available to us - unfortunately there are not that many."

Seddon should have given the Shakers the lead in the 12th minute but fired across the face of goal with plenty of time to fire past Huddersfield keeper Philip Senior.

He had the chance to make amends after Swailes' disastrous own-goal. However, when the chance to draw level presented itself, Seddon scuffed his shot.

Terry Dunfield went close with a delicious 25-yard drive before the interval but Senior did enough to parry the shot and the Huddersfield defence cleared the ball to safety.

Porter, battling against his illness, broke free early after the interval and was unlucky to see his right-footed snapshot fly inches wide of the target.

But the best of all the chances fell to Seddon in the 69th minute. He chased down a hopeful long ball and with Porter free in the box and only one defender in their way, it seemed inevitable an equaliser was on the cards.

Third time lucky? It wasn't to be though as Seddon tried to blast the ball into the back of the net on the half-volley instead of controlling it and hitting the target, or squaring to Porter to prod home. The shot flew embarrassingly wide and it summed up Bury's afternoon. Miserable.

"Gareth held his hand up at half-time and after the match for the chances he missed," admitted Bury skipper Lee Duxbury.

"He's a confidence player and you have to put your arm around him when he's down and also be angry with him when you need to be.

"You have to do that to get the best out of him, but he's just having a bad patch at the moment and we expect him to bounce back soon."
