PLANS to demolish the well-known "Dutch House" in Holcombe Road in Greenmount have been put on hold.

An application to demolish the distinctively shaped building and replace it with a new house was deferred for a site visit following an appeal by villagers.

The house, near to the junction with Tor Avenue, was built more than 50 years ago with rendered walls and a red tiled mansard roof.

Complaints were received from several residents, including protests that a "local landmark" would be lost.

One female objector, speaking at the latest meeting of Bury's planning control committee said: "To destroy this very special house is disgracefully insensitive.

"We all have a responsibility to work hard to preserve what is good and attractive in our area."

Despite concerns that little could be done to prevent demolition, councillors agreed to visit the site ahead of their next planning meeting.
