YOUNGSTERS in Walmersley are to net a new ball zone aimed at curbing anti-social behaviour.
Plans for the multi-use games area on open land to the rear of Ribble Drive and Palatine Drive will include measures to screen it from homes.
Included in the proposals are football and basketball facilities surrounded by green mesh fencing.
Plans approved by Bury's planning control committee will also include screening from homes with evergreen trees.
Householders feared the proposals would worsen problems with youths congregating in the area. Complaints included shouting, swearing, litter and vandalism.
However, members assured residents that similar developments across the borough had proved a positive influence on youth behaviour.
Councillor Alan Matthews said: "I can understand the objections from residents, but I wish they would go and look at some of the ball zones that are already in operation."
Visual and noise screening with trees was suggested, on the provision that it did not totally hide the park from view.
Councillor Mike Connolly said: "I think some compromise landscaping would benefit residents but the priority must be the safety of young people."
