I WANT to reply to the letter (December 23) from Mr Bleese headed: Cenotaph is just for red poppies.

I find his reason for removing my white dove and white poppy from the cenotaph "so that it would not be covered up" difficult to understand when he obviously objects to any poppies, other than red ones, being on the cenotaph.

This attitude is not one which Bolton Royal British Legion evidently agree with. During their march to the cenotaph a white wreath is carried and, as it is laid, it is announced that it is from the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND).

I agree with Mr Bleese when he says that the cenotaph is there for the people of Radcliffe to remember and show respect in their own private way. That is exactly what I was doing; remembering my husband and all others killed and maimed in wars.

If, as he says, "we all want peace" then surely remembrance is not enough. We should all be working continuously, as those of us in the peace movement already do, so that there will be no further need for cenotaphs with the names of future generations engraved on them. Please join us.
