ONE of the nation's most controversial issues was to be debated with experts and residents in Rossendale tonight, at the Astoria, Rawtenstall, at 7.30pm.
Rossendale Council's Overview and Scrutiny Committee was to open the water fluoridation debate to the public at an open meeting, which will also be attended by experts on both sides of the issue.
The Water Bill currently being considered by Parliament gives strategic health authorities the power to tell water companies to put fluoride in water in what is claimed to be a move to improve dental health.
Councillor Philip Young, Rossendale Council's Overview and Scrutiny Committee chairman, said: "Strategic health authorities have to consult widely before fluoridation can be introduced.
"This is a first-class opportunity for us all to influence a major debate."
The committee will arrive at a formal position on Thursday and will present it to Lancashire County Council."
