RESIDENTS are calling for safety to be improved on a Burnley road after a lorry driver crashed into the front porch of a house.

More than 70 people living in the Liverpool Road area signed a petition urging Burnley Council and Lancashire County Council to consider introducing traffic calming measures on the busy road.

Susan Jenkinson, of Liverpool Road, said there had been problems on the road for many years.

But the recent incident, just two doors up from her house, involving a truck driver who has since admitted being over the drink drive limit, was the final straw.

Susan, 48, said: "Fortunately, no-one was hurt in this case, but it has highlighted the safety problems we have had on this road for many years.

"There are four schools in this area, that means there are a lot of children walking up and down the road. Luckily, this incident happened after the school run otherwise it could have caused mayhem.

"We are hoping that some traffic calming measures can be introduced and maybe some railings put up. We need to protect the children going up and down the road to school."

Council leader Councillor Stuart Caddy, who represents the area, has called on Councillor Frank Cant, executive member responsible for planning, environment and transport, to arrange for highways engineers from Burnley Council and Lancashire County Council to visit the site. He said: "A site visit is important because we want to show them what residents are experiencing in this area. Something needs to be done about the amount of traffic that goes down there and the speed it goes down at."

Accrington truck driver, Alfred Taylor, 63, who crashed his Mercedes articulated lorry into a house and lamp post on Friday, December 5, has admitted being nearly three times over the legal alcohol limit and is awaiting sentence.
