COLNE pushed UniBond Premier side Lancaster City all the way, losing to the only goal of the game 10 minutes from time after dominating for long periods.

The visitors started the stronger, with Paul Walker testing the keeper with a stinging drive from 20 yards after only five minutes.

Scott Gizon was close with a header following Carl Haworth's run and was only just wide after being put through by James Webster.

Half-time came without Colne keeper Ross Baxter being called into action but Lancaster started the second half with two efforts on goal, which brought fine saves from Baxter, but again it was the Reds playing on the break who looked the more dangerous.

First a Lee Slater cross was headed over by Gizon and then Webster with a defence splitting ball found Walker, whose cross from the right saw Sam Hayes with the best chance of the night in front of goal but the opportunity went begging.

But, with 10 minutes left, Colne were dealt a cruel blow when the ball broke in the box to Sullivan, who turned to slot home from close range.

Although starting to tire, the Reds pressed again and two Webster corners in the final minutes caused panic in the home defence, nearly taking the game into extra time, which was no more than Colne deserved for their performance.

With no game this weekend, preparation now starts for the FA Vase game at AFC Wimbledon on January 17.

If the Reds approach the game as they did last night, they might just cause a shock.
