I AM unhappy about Blackburn's Church Street and believe it is far from excellent. First there is now a set of steps that have never been needed before. These seem to be down to the alterations that were carried out to the roadway on the Darwen Street/Higher Church Street corner. The street appears to have been raised.
I have walked the steps and don't feel comfortable when descending. The people who use them will have to be careful. Everything seems to be taking place on the left-hand side of the street.
The other side of the street is quite bare and has the roadway still in use for vehicles that service businesses through the underground tunnel. This is in constant use during shop hours and makes it impossible to properly develop the area.
Why, after spending millions have we ended up with such a concentrated mess in the street? There should never have been a car park in such a position of prominence as it is in Church Street. Any piece of spare land seems to be found suitable for parking.
