A BURNLEY Reserve side including six first squad members was far too strong for their Yorkshire rivals.
Goals in the second half from trialist striker John Harrison and a late Dean West penalty saw the Clarets cruise home.
And after being forced to field a vastly inexperienced side for most of the season, second string boss Ronnie Jepson was delighted to have some experience in his ranks to help steer the youngsters.
Jepson said: "I'm delighted because the senior pros applied themselves correctly and it was a good, competitive match with a few meaty tackles.
"When the games are like that, the guys get the most out of it by upping their fitness and adding a competitive edge to their game."
Burnley, with two more little-known trialists, keeper Greg Parker and striker Alan Hunter in the team, dominated the afternoon clash at the space-age McAlpine Stadium.
And the familiar face of Mo Camara was almost the unlikely scorer in the 41st minute with a thumping header from Alan Moore's free kick that smacked against the bar.
But just after the hour, following a scrappy opening to the second half, Matt O'Neill twisted and turned and crossed for Harrison to sidestep his marker and rifle home the opener from eight yards.
And West made sure of a welcome victory from the spot with seven minutes remaining after Joel Pilkington was upended by Burnley-born Adnan Ahmed.
