Warrington 5 Leigh 1st XV 40
Sweet revenge
in derby clash
LEIGH RU first XV produced a superb performance to completely destroy near neighbours Warrington 40-5 and to take full revenge for the narrow home defeat.
Leigh started strongly with Bate dominating at the line-out and were rewarded with a Fisher penalty.
The home side replied with a period of sustained pressure on the Leigh line but the defence, superbly led by Penn, held firm. Leigh then restored their ascendancy and were rewarded with a second penalty from Fisher. This was quickly followed by a magnificent try involving Hunt and Bate finished by Wilcock. Fisher converted from the touchline as the half-time whistle blew.
Leigh continued in the second half as their pacy backs now ran riot. Centre Hunte scored by the posts and further tries followed from Wilcock, twice as he completed his hat-trick, and a final score from winger Irwin. Fisher kicked two more conversions and a penalty to complete an outstanding win.
In a super team performance extra mention should go to the Leigh front row of Wood, Losty and Prescot, back row Sutton, scrum half Peacock and full-back and skipper Bentham who led his side with calm and discipline.
Leigh now look forward to an interesting end of season which sees them back in the promotion race and still going strong in both the Lancashire Cup and Lancashire Trophy.
Leigh 2nd XV 22, Stockport 22
Leigh produced their best performance of the season to share the points at Round Ash Park in this top of the table clash against a strong Stockport 2nd XV.
Leigh started the stronger as they put the visitors under a tremendous amount of pressure. Brett was unlucky not to score under the posts as the referee blew for a marginally forward pass from the brilliant Travers. From a quick tap penalty hooker Jibson put the strong running Webster through the gap who put winger Baines away only for the touch judge to notify the referee that the ball had been grounded short.
It was then Stockport's turn to pressure the home side. Leigh had flanker Davies controversially sin binned for offside. This was a little harsh as it was a first offence. Stockport immediately took advantage as the extra man in the pack took control and from the resulting penalty Stockport barged their way over for a try in the corner.
When Leigh had 15 men back on the pitch they quickly took advantage. From of a loose ball. Brett made the break for winger Egerton to cut back on the inside to easily round the full back to score near the posts. Andrews converted to make the score 7-5 in Leigh's favour.
Second row Robinson nearly put Leigh further ahead with two surging runs but last ditch tackles denied Leigh.
Stockport started the second half stronger and were rewarded with a pushover try which was converted from underneath the posts to make the score 7-12. Andrews pegged Stockport back to 10-12 with a well taken penalty from 30 yards out.
With 25 minutes to go Leigh did their very best to lose the game. After being awarded a penalty on the halfway line Leigh had the chance to put more pressure on Stockport. Instead of playing for territorial advantage, confusion set in and a mistake by one of the forwards gave Stockport good field position. From this their fly half made an outstanding break to put the supporting centre in for a try.
Leigh knew they had to dig deep and they did so almost immediately when after a good kick and chase centre Harrison stole the ball for Leigh to take advantage and the supporting Sale scored wide out to make the score 15 -17.
With both teams going for the win the play was going from end to end but it was Stockport who took advantage as the No 8 picked up from the base of the scrum to score in the corner for what they thought was the winning try.
With time running out Leigh gambled and ran everything. First King, then Woods were held short. In the dying minute Leigh thought they had scored when Harrison ploughed over but excellent defence stopped him from grounding the ball.
All seemed lost but hooker Jibson kept his nerve to take a ball against the head. From the resulting scrum Brett scorched his way through the cover to dive under the posts for a well deserved try. It was then up to Andrews to show his bottle and convert with the last kick of the game to make the scoreline a fair 22-22.
Leigh Colts 19, Eccles Colts 14
Leigh won a tense encounter against traditional local rivals despite being reduced to 14 men for most of the game.
The visitors scored an early converted try after a series of penalties but Leigh hit back with a strong score from Ben Halton, converted by Tom Andrews to level matters at the interval.
Leigh gained the ascendancy in the second half with Andrews scoring off a Lee Pugsley pass and Lee Davis forcing his way over near the posts, for Andrews to convert.
The visitors hit back with a converted try as Leigh lost their discipline late on, but held on for a narrow win to improve their league position.
Whitchurch Junior Colts 24, Leigh 7
Leigh fell foul of some unusual refereeing decisions in a loss at Whitchurch. The home side kept the ball close to their forwards and were able to build a winning lead with three first half tries.
Leigh however came back strongly in the second period and crossed the home side line on 3 occasions, with only one being awarded, after a powerful run by centre Calvin Crompton. Gwilliam converted. Leigh kept their discipline despite the frustrating nature of the game and competed to the final whistle.
Jones and Speakman at half back went well for Leigh as did Bishop and Martin in the forwards.
