Moorhouse's, the award winning Lancashire brewer with a distinct Atherton flavour, is set to expand in the North-west, including Greater Manchester, with a plan to buy pubs in the major towns.

Already supplying many free houses and pub company outlets throughout the region, the brewers, owned by Atherton businessman and Lifting Gear Hire Group boss Bill Parkinson, agreed a 'war chest' of funds to buy up suitable properties when they become available.

David Grant, general manager, said the aim is to further secure markets for their championship portfolio of cask ales including Black Cat -- judged Supreme Champion Beer of Britain 2000 -- and the celebrated Pendle Witches Brew. Moorhouse's long-term ambition, he said, is to have flagship houses in every major town in the area.

The initiative follows a busy and prosperous two years for Moorhouse's when volumes have risen by 16 per cent and gross profits by some 40 per cent. Substantial investment has also been made in the brewing plant and new administrative offices, recently officially opened by Roger Protz, editor of the CAMRA Good Beer Guide.
