CHORLEY Triathlete Jonathan Grundy is back home after flying half way across the world to compete in the ITU World Championships in Queenstown, New Zealand.

Representing Great Britain in the Age 20-24 class, he was the 12th British finisher in the18-man squad, and that after just squeezing into the team in 17th.

He got a flying start in the swim coming, out of the lake 14th but suffered during the run due to a damaged knee suffered a couple of weeks ahead of the tournament.

His total time was 2 hours 27 minutes 59 seconds with the 1,500m swim taking 20:56, the 40k bike ride lasting 1:19:22 and finishing with a 10k run in 47:42.

He was 68th outright in a field of 82.

Grundy struggled to raise the necessary funds for the trip but was helped by both of his clubs - Chorley Harriers and Chorley Athletic Club - and his employers Hayes and Co Accountants in Blackburn.

Undaunted by his Kiwi adventure, he will be trying to qualify for the 2005 Championships in Japan.
