MEMBERS of the public are being invited to help shape the future of their local health service.

Following the abolition of Bury Community Health Council last month, those with an interest in health issues are needed to sit on the new Patient and Public Involvement Forums to be the voice of their local community.

North West regional manager for the Commission for Patient and Public Involvement in Health, Paul Siddall said: "The new year is often a time when many of us resolve to do something to improve our health. So we are asking people to go one step further and help themselves and others by becoming a voice for health in their area and make a real difference."

More than 800 people in the North West have so far applied to join the forums, which enable local people to have a say in decisions about local NHS services and issues which affect health. There will be a forum representing Bury Primary Care Trust and The Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, which is responsible for Fairfield Hospital.

Mr Siddall added: "We would particularly like to encourage people who have not previously been involved. They will receive all the support they need."

Anyone interested in becoming forum members should call 01925 543000 or visit www.maketimeforhealth.org

Comments are also being invited on a new draft reference guide for forums. The guide provides an initial overview of what the role of a forum member might entail and the type of support which can be expected.

The guide can be seen on-line at www.cppih.org or by calling 0845 120 7111.
